Mar. 15th, 2006:

We have a very compelling range of articles for you this month: Putnam Barber makes some strong recommendations on how to keep things ethically clean in the administration of your organization. Kumi Naidoo, whom I had the pleasure of meeting at last year's SANGONeT Conference in South Africa, writes about the roles and responsibilities of global civil society movements. Michael Blanding tells us about the experience and the work of Rachel Corrie's parents. Glenda Eoyang's 12 part taxonomy of the field of complexity is particularly relevant to today's "web 2.0" world. Katie Delahaye Paine's recommendations about trust measurement are of particular relevance to nonprofits. And finally, Bishop Gene Robinson talks about the nature of giving, charity, and justice.

Our regular features are worth a close look this month. My quicksheet is intended to help organizations who are choosing among the new channels of communication available to them online, particularly enewsletters and weblogs. We also have a modest 22 news items and five book reviews, but as usual these resources are rich and dense.

Articles:

Trust, But Cut the Cards .....11
By Put Barber
Although we're used to corruption in government and business these days, in the nonprofit sector we often treat necessary safeguards as some kind of disrespect. But it doesn't have to, and shouldn't, be that way.

Guidelines for Measuring Trust in Organizations ..... 16
By Katie Delahaye Paine
Trust is the lifeblood of civil society. Although written from a business perspective, this article lays out the basic elements of measuring trust and managing for its maintenance.

The Practitioner's Landscape ..... 29
By Glenda Eoyang
Well-informed nonprofit communication and technology consultants are aware of the field of complexity and emergence, but there are probably only a few who are able to put that field to any use in their work. This twelve part taxonomy will help you get a handle on the field.

Accidental Activists ..... 37
By Michael Blanding
The parents of Rachel Corrie didn't plan to be activists. But when an Israeli bulldozer killed their daughter, their lives turned in the direction shared only by those other families who have lost loved ones to the actions of politicians.

Civil Society Must Oppose, but Also Propose ..... 43
By Kumi Naidoo
Whether you attended the 2006 World Social Forum gathering in Caracas or not, the movement gives us all an opportunity to reflect on the role of civil society on the global stage.

Giving So It Matters ... 45
By Bishop V. Gene Robinson
This speech, delivered at the October 2005 OutGiving Conference, lays out a vision of how charity and justice go hand in hand and how giving is not an act of guilt, but an act of gratitude.
