Nov. 15th, 2005:

The months of October and November have brought a lot of new projects at the Gilbert Center and you can see hints of that in this month's issue of the Journal. We're very excited about what's coming for the new year and the content of the Journal is helping us lay the groundwork for it.

Your readership is the key. We now know that there are people who do more than read the top ten fundraising tips of the month, or who just want someone to tell them what software to buy. Our readers are people who are taking the time to reflect, who are not afraid of challenging ideas, and who are genuinely excited by the prospects of new strategies of communication. For confirming our faith in the sector, I offer you my gratitude. Thank you.

This month's Journal offers five articles: My own Twelve Ways To Fail at Email follows a key principle of mine, which is that its often easier to remove barriers to success than to assemble new engines to plow forward. Marc Stenlin's knowledge management piece explores the role of physical infrastructure in promoting sharing. The Danish government has documented the role of ICT in helping meet the Millenium Development Goals. I still hold out hope for those goals, despite having been undermined recently by the United States. Rick Cohen doesn't pull any punches in his advice to the world of philanthropy. There are important ideas in here. Finally, Tom Kelley's Ten Faces of Innovation gives us a framework where everyone can participate in moving an organization forward.

We have our usual features of course: 35 resources organized into 26 categories. We have pulled out a new, small section for Gilbert Center announcements. The month's classifieds ads are here too, in their own section. And I'm very excited about the revision to the workflow of the Email Savvy Organization, which you will find in our latest Quicksheet.

Enjoy this month's journal and stay tuned for more!

Articles:

Twelve Ways to Fail at Email ..... 10
By Michael C. Gilbert
Having a strategy is one thing, but sometimes we just need a checklist of thing to do, or in this case, things to watch out for. We have improved since the Email Manifesto in 2001, but these 12 mistakes are still widespread.

Knowledge Management Feng Shui:
Designing Knowledge Sharing-Friendly Office Space ..... 17

By Marc Steinlin
This great case study demonstrates a core principle: People want knowledge just in time, when they need it (Steinlin calls it "on demand"), and this depends upon appropriate relationships being in place, often in the form of communities of practice. In other words, knowledge management is yet another form of relationship management.

ICT to Reach Millennium Development Goals ..... 23
From: Royal Dannish Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Drawn from the Danish International Development Agency's delightfully modest Good ICT Practices site, this piece on the UN Millenium Goals looks at how ICT can contribute in three areas: Health, Business, Education, and Agriculture.

What Can and Should Philanthropy Do in the Future? ..... 30
By Rick Cohen
In his contribution to the first Dialogues on Civic Philanthropy, Rick Cohen focuses on critical issues of the day, grassroots democracy, reversing debilitating funding practices, democratizing philanthropy, advocacy and organizing, and the business of philanthropy.

The Ten Faces of Innovation ..... 34
By Tom Kelley
Too often innovation is seen as the role of specialists or of certain very specific personality types. Tom Kelley's vision of innovation has a place for everyone.
