December 2006:
The Journal continues to be part of our evolution as an organization. This month's issue, a bit delayed by holidays and a storm, truly delights us. Michael Gilbert has contributed his analysis of our blogging survey to our ongoing exploration of knowledge management. We hope to encourage you to do your own surveys of the knowledge assets of your stakeholders. He has also done a special two page Quicksheet on the topic of After Action Reviews for Nonprofits, which alone could serve as a solid approach to organizational learning. We're pleased to share two very substantial pieces this month. Grantcraft has prepared a superb Executive Transitions Guide, and GBN's introduction to scenario based planning for nonprofits puts a powerful tool in our hands. We're also very happy to include Andrew Himes' perspective on the current opportunity for political reconciliation that affects so many of us in this time of war. Finally, we have 22 annotated resources and five short book reviews in this issue. |

A First Look at our 2006 Blogging Survey
By Michael C. Gilbert
This initial report from our 2006 Blogging Survey has a strong bearing on this publication's continuing exploration of knowledge management in civil society. It compiles the basic results of the three core questions about blogging, social bookmarking, and informal sharing, and wraps up with a feactionable insights for organizations and their stakeholders.
15 - Scenario Thinking in Practice
From The Global Business Network, By Diana Scearce, and Katherine Fulton
This is a solid introduction to one of the key tools of qualitative futurism, using language and examples accessible to civil society. Although it can be a conservative force, scenario thinking forces us to work at the edge between what is going to happen and what should happen. In the right hands, this can provide substantial leverage for change agency.
47 - A Teachable Moment?
By Andrew Himes
The founder of Voices in Wartime tells a story that spans two generations of war and resistance, and explores how we can bridge our cultural and political divides through dialogue. He wonders if now, in the wreckage of the Iraq War, we have reached a moment in which the divisions that stall us can be healed.
52 - Executive Transitions Guide
From GrantCraft, By Angela Bonavoglia and Anne Mackinnon
Funders play a powerful role in leadership transitions in the organizations they support. This guide makes the grantmaker a partner with the organization, doing what it does well and being supportive of the organization for the rest.
