July 14th, 2006:

Our lead article this month is by the author and teacher Jean Houston on Social Artistry, the approach she has been taking for a number of years in her international leadership development work. Building Bridges Across Divides is an interview with Kumi Naidoo of CIVICUS, who should be a familiar name to you by now. In The Changing Nature of Change, Peggy Holman takes a stab at a whole systems approach to the transformation of groups. The nonprofit sector isn't yet paying attention to the topic of online identity management, but as with so many other things, it would serve civil society better if they did. In Anonymity and Online Community, John Grohol looks at the practical issues that face any organization dealing with online community building. Finally, we're publishing Michael Stein's interview with Michael Gilbert, entitled The Enduring Power of the Gilbert Email Manifesto.

We have 28 annotated resources this month, in 26 categories, along with three book reviews. Michael Gilbert's Quicksheet for you this month is on Managing Hybrid Publishing Tiers. It advances the conversation of how organizations can leverage the power of networks while still preserving their identity as organizations.

Articles:

10 - Applying Social Artistry to Decentralized Governance for Human Development
By Jean Houston, Ph.D.
Jean Houston spoke with passion in the opening keynote address of the recent Sacred Activism conference. She spoke on the same topic on which she writes here, the need for a creative form of leadership that bridges the gap between the mythical and the practical, which she calls Social Artistry.

33 - Interview with Kumi Naidoo: Building Bridges Across Divides
By Caroline Hartnell
Kumi Naidoo is the General Secretary of CIVICUS. In this interview, he discusses the organization's move to South Africa, the influence of their Civil Society Index and other programs, and what the next five years holds for this growing force in international civil society.

40 - The Changing Nature of Change: Whole System Methods for Shaping the Future
By Peggy Holman & Tom Devane
Peggy Holman was a presenter at the recent Sacred Activism Conference. Her Open Circle Company focuses on empowering models of group work. This article pulls those and other themes together: It is an honest look at why change management has earned a bad reputation and it collects a great many change management strategies and puts them in a very useful historical context.

50 - Anonymity and Online Community: Identity Matters
By John Grohol
Persistent identity, even if it's anonymous, is a key to successful online communities. This piece argues that membership should be used as a filter in order to help build community, and provides six clear steps that organizations can use to implement such a filter in order to nurture deeper ties and wider participation.

57 - The Enduring Power of The Gilbert Email Manifesto
A conversation between Michael Gilbert and Michael Stein
The publication of the Gilbert Email Manifesto was arguably a watershed event in the history of nonprofit use of the Internet. Michael Stein's interview with Michael Gilbert looks at why its influence persists, how to put strategy before tools, and how vendors can help advance the field.
