Oct. 13th, 2005:

Welcome to the October 2005 issue of Nonprofit Online News Journal. I think you will find it to be both deep and challenging. I know I did.

We lead off our articles this month with our own original research into communication centered knowledge management, in a piece called "Opening the Silos." We're pleased to include a very lengthy piece from the Center for Contemplative Mind in Society on "The Impact of Contemplative Awareness on Social Justice Work." It touches on several foundational issues. Then, Thomas Riley's article on "E-Platforms for Citizens' Engagement" helps drive home the importance of civil society organizations in the context of the new technologies of government.

Next, Pamela Jones makes it clear how proprietary protocols and formats are a life or death issue in "When Open Standards really Matter, the Katrina Factor." Then, David Geilhufe hits the key points about the role of ICT in facilitating cooperative ventures in his piece on "Web 2.0 Collaboration." Finally, we wrap up with The Hybrid Publishing Model Quicksheet, a one page annotated illustration of a a melding of new and old frameworks of publishing authority.

We also have 66 annotated resources from the last month, organized into 28 Internet Nonprofit Center categories. We reviewed 6 books last month and they will be found in one section for your convenience. And finally, last month started with a heartbreaking calamity of profound significance to American civil society, Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and the inundation of New Orleans. We have compiled the news and resources related to this still unfolding event under its own heading.
