One of the most powerful and essential preparations to be made before embarking on a knowledge management project is an understanding of people's existing patterns of communication. This is one of the lessons of Communication Centered Planning. I explore this insight in depth in Opening the Silos: Leveraging Communication for Foundation Knowledge Management, my most recent feature article. Based upon research into the actual information consumption patterns and flows of foundation program officers, I concluded that a system organized around program areas, which emphasizes connection with trusted experts, and delivers content in a highly digestible form should be the key principles behind new knowledge management efforts.
