Details of Possible Improvements
Part of our 2004 Spring Forward Campaign
More original articles by Michael Gilbert:
By far and away our most popular material continues to be original articles by Michael Gilbert. Michael donates his time to write these (except the resources we charge for) but it costs us to twist his arm, edit, and publish them.
More original articles by other prominent thinkers:
Over the years, a number of prominent nonprofit thinkers have contributed their work to Nonprofit Online News. They also donate their time, but there are still numerous costs involved.
Improved access to RSS feeds:
More and more people want to read their news through an RSS news reader, rather than through email or on the web. We want to make it easier for people to set their preferences and still stay connected.
Upgrade the website with the latest HTML standards for accessibility:
We have long been champions of standards and accessibility. But as those standards have advanced, we have fallen behind. We would like to remedy that.
A new monthly PDF magazine style edition:
The popularity of our various free PDF publications has astonished us. If there is sufficient interest, we will create a printable monthly edition, in the style of a magazine.
Improve the search engine and archive:
Our 5,000+ annotated resources are one of our greatest assets and yet our subscribers' access to them are hampered by primitive archives and an inadequate search engine.
A new html email edition of the news:
We've learned from research that it is clean layout and focus, rather than format, that makes the biggest difference for people in email. For years, we pursued this strategy through plain text email. We want to look at very simple, clean HTML as a new format.
A new "Email to a Friend" feature:
We want to begin putting tools into our subscribers hands that allow them to be a resource for their colleagues. A well implemented article forwarding feature will be a step in this direction.
A new visual design for the web site:
We think we could make most of the pages of Nonprofit Online News both more attractive and more useful by revising and tightening the visual design.
