Tsunami heroes

Although the word "hero" has been undermined by its focus on militarism in recent years, the stories emerging from the wake of the tsunami give us examples of true heroism. (A Salon day pass or subscription is required and you might need to scroll down to see the entry.)

Christian right's compassion deficit

As the U.S. government tries to overcome the embarrassment of offering $15 million of aid to Indian Ocean tsunami victims (though even today's $350 million pledge is one seventh the per capita amount that Sweden has pledged), it is nonprofits that have responded most rapidly. Although there are some noticeable exceptions to the sector's outpouring of compassion. Upon some reflection, I need to point out that this last bit of research is narrow and the conclusions too sweeping.

In his article on Why Wikipedia Must Jettison Its Anti-Elitism, Wikipedia co-founder Larry Sanger tackles an issue that, in my experience, cripples a great many volunteer efforts: the frequent dominance of difficult people and the anti-elitism that protects those people's behaviors and drives out volunteers who have valuable expertise.
