The Foundation for Good Governance in the United Kingdom has produced a guide to Ten Essential Ingredients to Good Governance in Nonprofit Organizations (2 page PDF). In short, they are: (1) Read the governing documents. (2) Make sure that staff and board have read and understand the organization's business plans. (3) Devote care and attention to getting the right mix of people on the board. (4) Develop written policies and procedures, including a code of conduct. (5) Take meetings seriously. (6) Make sure board members are well informed. (7) Ensure that financial reporting is given due importance. (8) Spend time on building good relationships.
