NTEN Chicago Conference 2002

The Nonprofit Technology Enterprise Network will hold a regional conference in Chicago on October 31 and November 1, 2002. I have an annual event in my home on the evening of the first, or else I would be there. The San Francisco event was well done.

Dan Gilmore's 10 Choices that were Critical to the Net's Success is an example of good thinking that can still be applied to the creation of new networks on top of the Internet. In particular, nonprofits and funders who support centralization and control in online information or service projects should take heed that this was not how the Internet itself succeeded.

A Brave and Compassionate Response (a year later)

In my first feature article after 9/11 last year, I wrote "My concern today is not with inaction. I am far more deeply concerned that we will pursue irresponsible action." A year later, I still am. I still believe that a brave and compassionate response will involve more deep listening.

My First Death Threat (one year later)

A few months after 9/11, I wrote a piece entitled My First Death Threat, which was about the threat to my home and my life that I got for choosing to fly a United Nations flag from my balcony. The flag is still there.

Update: Email Overload In Congress

The Congress Online Project has posted an Update to their E-mail Overload In Congress research. Looks like U.S. elected representatives are getting a handle on things, with practices much like those used by Nonprofit Online News and other organizations that focus on email, including a well integreated mix of email and web forms for structured communication.
