I'm reading a charming book called Orbiting the Giant Hairball, by Gordon MacKenzie. It's a book about how to thrive in the context of large bureaucratic organizations, written by a creative type at Hallmark, believe it or not. Aside from the sweet insight of his many stories, MacKenzie's central metaphor of orbiting is right on: It's a way to connect to a large institution and take advantage of its gravity without succumbing to it.
